  • Excellent and affordable flatbed scanner for small batches of photos and documents
Style: Perfection V19 II
I’m very happy with this flatbed scanner. Epson’s website provides installation packets online - just select your operating system version from their dropdown menu. The installation of the the Epson software, drivers and documentation to my iMac went flawlessly. I scanned about 50 photos, several small paintings and a few paper documents and the resulting images, PDFs, etc. looked identical to the originals. I was able to scan 3-4 photo prints at a time (e.g., 5x3.5in) and the software automatically created separate files for each photo. After each scan, you are able to optionally rotate each image, edit the file defaults (format/name/location), and save/print/send it. The process is easy, flexible and logical. There are also buttons to turn on/off color and/or contrast enhancements and these are sometimes helpful, although I preferred to use Lightroom in post for more comprehensive photo restorations. If you need to do occasional small-batch scanning, this affordable flatbed scanner is an excellent choice. ... show more

  • Wonderful scanner for a great price.
Style: Perfection V19 II
This was a great price for a scanner. My 'new' printer did not come with a scanning option, to my surprise. This was exactly what I was looking for. I will take the longer 14" paper. Easy to set up and worked the first time I tried. Very pleased. I am scanning older family pictures, and it's doing a great job. ... show more

  • Excellent quality, OK software
Style: Perfection V19 II
I had a dual need for a scanner - a few documents and a lot of photos. Turns out there aren't really any solutions for less than about $700 that do both well and even then there are compromises. I decided that my priority was photos and landed on the Epson. Once you go with flatbed, you are locked into needing a relatively large surface to put it on. The Epson has very little "extra" beyond the size of the bed so its almost optimally sized. Its also very thin and light so you can put it on just about any flat surface. I named it next to my keyboard with about 25% of it hanging off the desk with no issue. Software installation was simple and easy. On my Mac plugging in the scanner launches the software. On my windows system I have to launch it separately. No big deal. The software itself is just ok. I creates a unique file name each time which is great so you dont accidentally overwrite a file but it would be nice if it took your last rename and added to it. So as an example if you renamed it to "Disney Vacation" then making the next one "Disney Vacation 002" automacily would be nice. The software also seems to randomly flip the images upside down. Like I put them on the bed the same way but for some reason the software flipped it. Changing it back was easy but its still time. One of the things I had forgotten about scanners like this - the use your computers processor! I had originally set this up with an old (i7 970) Windows machine because it had a better location for setting up the scanner. It was slooooooow. So slow I considered returning it. Then I hooked it up to my modern Mac. 10x faster. Not exaggerating at all. Thats generally a very good thing because faster computer - faster scan - but not great if you were trying to use an older system as your scan station. The scanner itself is powered by the USB connection. This is a HUGE DEAL. One of the reasons I bought this is because I had an older scanner that was worthless because of a proprietary power brick that was dead. Overall I really like this scanner and the images it produces are great. The software is disappointing but Epson can fix that. Recommended. ... show more

  • Dies After 10 Days; Randomly Crashes on Windows; Will Require Complete SYSTEM RESTART to Fix
Style: Perfection V19
The media could not be loaded. ***FIFTY-FOURTH DAY UPDATE*** Device completely bricked. A very flimsy, useless piece of paper, attached to the scanner head, came loose and now jams the scanner header every time it does a scan. Video attached. So, for whatever you pay, you only get a scanner for two months. That's like a rental. ***EIGHTEEN DAY UPDATE*** The "scan" button is grayed out mysteriously, and I can't scan anymore. The "preview" button works perfectly, and utilizes the actual physical device, but "scan", absolutely does not work. Repeat fix procedure from Fifteen-Day-Update: Fixed. ***FIFTEEN DAY UPDATE*** Epson scanner software errors out on connection everytime. In order to fix: Remove epson driver from device manager, uninstall epson software, delete user/appdata folder and program files dirs, remove every entry containing the word "epson" from the registry editor (start->run->regedit). Failure to do ANY of the above will mean that the Epson scanner is permanently broken for ~that~ particular computer. So, either fix that computer, or find another computer for some ~200 scans before breaking again. ***THIRTEEN DAY UPDATE*** After physically repairing the scanner, I now get this error: "epson scanner scan button grayed out". If you google it, you will find thousands of others with the same exact problem. THERE IS NO SOLUTION TO THIS. ***TEN DAY UPDATE*** I have been using the Epson Scanner for only ten days. It is official BRICKED; its drivers are no longer working on the machine it is connected to. Other machines work, which means it's a driver issue -- but uninstalling the driver WILL NOT FIX IT. That means, YOU HAVE TEN DAYS BEFORE EPSON SCANNER BREAKS, per computer. Good luck. All you get when you run Epson Scanner, after this period, is just a small, little box that says "Epson", and without any functionality whatsoever. ***INITIAL REVIEW*** Initially, I was impressed at this light-weight, sleek solution. But then I started to actually use it. After only a few days of a use, the biggest complaint is this: it crashes, randomly, nothing can connect to it (epson software or windows fax&scan), the lights won't turn on, etc.., and the only way to return it to normal is to completely close all applications and restart your system. Uh, yeah, since I'm just scanning as a background activity to other primary activities (since it takes 7 minutes to do as can), this is incredibly annoying. Can I give a negative star rating? ... show more
