I love this thing! I throw some newspaper or the charcoal bag under the basket. Put some vegetable oil on the paper, fill the chimney and wait. In about 20 to 30 minutes the coals are hot and ready to go! I tried the soak it down with fluid method and never got the results I wanted. This works perfectly every time! So my propane grill broke down and I was left with a small charcoal grill, I don’t have much experience with charcoal grilling and I was really struggling to light it and keep it lit and heated well. That struggle lead me to this, and for the cost? Wow it worked better than I thought and I don’t even use the kindling they sell. I just grab a few flammable things to start it and drop my charcoal in and bam I’m basically done and every single time my food cooks better than ever, evenly and tastes great cause I don’t even need to use fire accelerant anymore. I got this smaller charcoal chimney for about half price through the Amazon Warehouse, and it works just fine. I think it must have been returned because the person buying it thought it was too small. For me, it’s just right. I measured out 2 lbs. of lump charcoal, which was recommended for cooking a 16 inch pizza without wasting coals, and that’s pretty much what this chimney holds. I’ve never used a charcoal chimney before, but I put a few pine cones underneath the grid instead of newspaper as my kindling, and I soon had glowing coals in the chimney above.
