  • The Best Wearable Second Monitor
Model: Luma Ultra
I am going to write a rather comprehensive review here, but if there's one thing I think you should take out of this, it's that you should be objective and realistic about what these are and what they ultimately do. These glasses are, at their very core, a very bright, very high-resolution secondary monitor and speakers built into a set of shades, using DisplayPort over USB-C. It is powered by the USB-C device it is plugged into. For my use case, paired with a Steam Deck, that alone is why it is a five-star product at this price point. In more detail, the glasses are easy to use and have worked with every device I have plugged them into that also supports Display Port over USB-C. The sound quality, also transmitted over USB-C, is equivalent to a full-fledged VR headset (note that these are XR glasses; there is a difference) like the MetaQuest. That's pretty impressive considering they're built into the temples of the glasses. I appreciate the variety of fit options, including the ability to adjust how the glasses sit on your face and swap out nose pads. I can use these for hours playing Hades II on my Steam Deck, with the Deck screen completely off, and using the Deck as a controller. The one comment about hardware is I do believe the glasses should have had the "Charge and Play" USB-C splitter bundled with them - because when you're using these you're going to want to use them for a while, and eventually whatever you have them plugged into will die if it's not a plugged in PC or a phone on a wireless charger. Something I think the critics are hyper-focusing on is the software experience, which is clearly still a work in progress. The software, SpaceWalker, is where all the features come in that you would not expect an external monitor to handle on its own: the hand-gesture stuff, the 3D conversion stuff, and the like. These features aren't terribly important to me given my use case, but perhaps they are to others. I found the "minivideo" function, where I could use the glasses as normal glasses while also playing a YouTube video in the bottom corner, so I could do housework to be a novel feature. Viture is in an odd place because they essentially need developers to create software that uses their API, but I would like to think that they'll add support for Steam VR in the future, and all of this complaining about software support could be put to bed. ... show more

  • Stunning Visuals, Catastrophic Compatibility
Model: Luma Ultra
Pros (Objective Feedback): I must admit, the Micro-OLED display is visually stunning. There is zero screen-door effect (SDE) thanks to the high PPD. The color reproduction and contrast are industry-leading compared to current competitors. As a dedicated device for video consumption, the viewing experience is exceptionally comfortable. Core Cons (Reasons for Return): Abysmal SoC Compatibility: On the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, video output is chronically unstable, with frequent flickering and black screens regardless of resolution or refresh rate adjustments. Devices with MediaTek chips fail to recognize the video signal entirely. Forget productivity—this isn't even viable for basic entertainment. 6DoF "Imprisoned" in SpaceWalker: Despite being installed on a phone, it’s essentially just a siloed browser that has zero interaction with other apps. When casting from a PC, 6DoF is completely disabled, and the device regresses into a static, lifeless 2D display. Pseudo-AR Experience: While marketed as "AR," the physical transparency is insufficient for safe navigation. Walking while wearing these is impossible. Incomplete Cable Ecosystem: Most desktop GPUs lack a native USB-C video port. Connecting to a PC requires a specialized DisplayPort to USB-C Female adapter, which is incredibly difficult to find. This oversight makes desktop connectivity a nightmare. Prohibitive Learning & Configuration Costs: Achieving 3D conversion or VR game compatibility requires users to juggle multiple third-party plugins. As a "flagship" accessory, it offers no turnkey, "one-click" solution to lower the barrier for users. Summary: Paying $600 for a product that can't even connect to a standard desktop GPU, is "picky" about host devices, and suffers from extreme functional isolation is unacceptable. It feels like an isolated, half-baked prototype rather than a finished consumer product. ... show more
