"Simply enter your zip code or city, and your HOMEPATROL-2 selects the channels in use in your area. Follows communications on APCO 25 Phase 1, Phase 2, X2-TDMA, Motorola, EDACS and LTR trunked systems. If you are not interested in becoming a self-taught radio engineer or working through complex radio system hierarchy programing, then the HomePatrol II scanner is for you. It's as easy as it gets and is a radio scanner for the rest of us. The HomePatrol II is simple to operate and you'll be listening in minutes. Just follow the Quick Start-Up instructions and you will hear everything you buy a scanner for. ZERO painful manual programing required. Plug it into your PC, install the Sentinel software, let the unit automatically update its firmware, follow the touch screen instructions, allow it to charge, put in your ZIP Code and voilà, you're listening to what's going on around you. You can pick and choose the services you want to hear. Take it with you when you travel, load in the ZIP Code of your destination, choose the services you want to hear, and you're listening to the local radio traffic. All via touch screen menus. I also own the BCD325P2- which I like, but it requires complex manual programming or third party software to program. I learned to use FreeScan to program it and can get the Systems, Sites, Groups and Talk IDs that I want to hear loaded into the scanner but it takes some time and effort even after the learning curve. My BCD325P2 and BC245XLT Trunk Tracker III are great scanners and learning them made me more technically savvy. But if simplicity and actual listening is what you seek, you've found it with the HomePatrol II. However, if the actual journey towards scanning is just important to you as the destination; then I recommend the BCD325P2 or one of the high-end Uniden scanners. Like most Unidens of late, the HP-2 is an easy to use scanner that updates the HP-1 to add P-25 TDMA (phase 2) and USB charging/power. You enter your zip code and select what you want to hear. Building favorites lists is easy. Runs off included AA NiMH or USB power, they include a power cable but you'll need to provide your own USB power source of 1 amp or more. I leave it on a local P25 system to monitor our fire dispatch and firegrounds and it works wonders. It can also record radio traffic for later playback. Does weather alert too. I have a 436 and this form factor/touch screen is great for a desk or bed side if you want to keep an ear on things. Note that if your desired radio systems use encryption, this and any scanner will NOT receive encrypted talk groups on trunking systems or frequencies, so always check sites like Radio Reference or local experts before buying. ... show more

Don’t buy the hype, you can’t simply punch in a zip code and viola it works. This thing is impossible to program. It in fact comes with an advertisement for a company that will provide you with a programmed card. At an additional $99.00 and that was only for two counties I picked right here in town. So there goes the idea of traveling with it. The whole thing is just a flawed design, the shape of the unit and the stand for it place it at an awkward angle to see the screen. The antenna doesn’t stay in place and easily comes loose, causing the radio to lose signal, and even at its best the reception isn’t great and I live in town The record and replay function are really cool, speaker is loud enough to hear clearly. Oh yeah another problem, their tech support was less than useless when I called to try and program it myself. 1-11-26 I have had this scanner for a good while now, and I only grow to hate it more and more, but due to the rather hefty investment in have in it . I’m stuck with it for now. It is extremely user unfriendly, it is next to impossible to change channels. Due to the touch screen. You would think that it would have some sort of numeric keyboard pop up on the screen so that you can choose a specific channel. If you want a specific channel now it’s frustrating because you have to touch a tiny little spot, within half of a second. Do your self a favor and buy a handheld model, and I know some sucker that would make you a good deal on this one! I can’t stress it enough DO NOT buy this scanner, it’s garbage, I have never been so disappointed in uniden. I have been an amateur radio operator for over 30 years now and have plenty of experience with scanners. Like I said before, stick with a handheld device. ... show more
