The author’s creation and development of characters are in my view is outstanding as is her description of the period of time in which the action takes place on a train from Normandy into Paris. It is easy to see the persons come alive as a interact in first class, the second class and third class, carriages attached to the train and the political tension that surrounds the characters from all walk of life and all economic Levels of the operation and French society are very very telling of a culture of prejudice and cast like prejudice. Her portrayal of characters develop to her work of observation and living among the provision people is obvious. She is also taken great care to provide vivid, and I presume accurate descriptions of each town and each railroad station portrayed in the Vignettes that she reminisce about. She provides for the reader a truly surprise ending that hits one just like a train hits one and that’s the beauty of her uncanny ability for surprise and suspense captured into a well written historical fiction based on fact. I really do like the way she develops a post log of the characters and provides a historical perspective from real life documentation in News media and other sources that details each of the characters post train trip Life. I would score this as a five out of five and give her other books a consideration to read. ... show more

I did not enjoy this book. Although characters were well developed I felt the conclusion left the story rather than ending it.

Like other readers, I found the book to be interesting but for the sheer number of characters the author used to fill out the tale. It is impossible to keep them all straight, let alone find one or two that you can root for. The book caused me to research the interesting true story of the train wreck, which I had never heard of. ... show more

    • Where to start?

This book starts very slowly, but it's so beautifully written that one is compelled to keep reading. I almost gave up several times, but there was just enough suspense and incredible detail to keep me engaged. Based on a true story, we know the train is headed for disaster, but the possibility of a bomb on board keeps us guessing at just how much poetic license the author will take. This is certainly not the most exciting book I've read this year, but the level of detail and the well-crafted prose make it a worthwhile read. ... show more
