  • Definitive of the genre
After being stuck in a rut with the thrash I grew up with for years, I discovered melodic death metal what must now be 15yrs ago. I fell in love with the heavy yet melodic guitars and the harsh growled vocals, combined with Michael's soft, clean vocals. I found out that keyboards can be cool and I expanded my horizons. Dark Tranquillity quickly became one of my favorites. I don't particularly care for Gallery and Skydancer but to me, The Mind's I, Projector, Haven and Damage Done are not only my favorite DQ albums but some of the finest examples of melodic death metal ever written. Back then, everything about this music was different. While Therion and Nightwish were pioneering symphonic/operatic metal, DQ (along with In Flames, At the Gates and others) was pioneering the Gothenburg sound. Projector stands out among the rest as one of, if not the best of the bunch. There is a great variety of sounds on this album, with probably more of Michael's clean vocals than any other album. From ballads like Auctioned and Day To End to more powerful tunes like FreeCard and ThereIn. It's a great album from a band that created and defined a genre and anyone who loves melodic death metal should have it in their library. ... show more

  • Remarkable stuff
I guess there's some kind of contradiction in describing a CD as melodic progressive death metal, but that's what comes closest for me. I think that death metal works best when the vocals are clean at least some of the time, as they are here. It's a diverse CD, with no weak tracks (almost the ultimate compliment), and holds up well to repeated listening. My favorite track right now is 'To A Bitter Halt' (which is one of the tracks that took a while to grow on me), thanks to its dead-on tempo changes and multiple contrasting themes. Be warned, it's particularly hard to get a feel for this CD from the 30 second samples on Amazon, both because these tracks take more time than that to appreciate, and because the loss of sound quality in the streamed audio really detracts (especially the loss of lower frequencies). 'Damage Done', their latest CD, is good as well, though none of the vocals are clean on that one. ... show more

  • short review.
It's Dark Tranquility that has never failed me except the one and 'only' song ( I hope). This album has 14 songs and all good.

  • A successful experiment
Projector is Dark Tranquillity's most experimental album to date. Dark Tranquillity is one of the founders of the Gothenburg Death Metal sound. On Projector the bands walked away from that typical sound. There are still typical melodic Death Metal riffs and harsh vocals, but the musical spectrum on Projector is much wider. The whole album has got a more Gothic vibe. Especially the clean vocals and the use of keyboards give the album that Gothic touch. The clean vocals sound deep and melancholic. The guitarists use less melodic Death Metal riffs and play more atmospheric distortion less parts. The guitarists use more effects on the guitars, like the flanger-effect. One of the only fast songs is "Sun Fired Blanks" and that song is still rather mid-tempo compared to songs from earlier albums. On the song "Undo Control" the band gets a little help from a female quest vocalist. The song is one of my favourite songs. The strangest song is "Day To End", which is an atmospheric song, without guitars. The song consists of clean vocals and keyboard-sounds. The album could have had heavier parts, but because the songs are varied and well written I highly recommend this album. If you like melancholic Metal with some melodic Death Metal elements and you like both clean melancholic and harsh vocals, then check out Projector. ... show more

  • Depeche Mode meets Morbid Angel
The title I have given this review pretty much sums up what the music on this album sounds like, at least from my perspective. The fusion of Dark Tranquillity's usual heavy riffs and brutal vocals coupled with the prominence of deep, imposing clean singing and Depeche Mode-like electronic beats and melodies makes for a combination that most fans of either musical world do not often associate with one another. That being said, to say that this album is a masterpiece is simply an understatement. Vocalist Mikael Stanne demonstrates his superior range to the fullest extent on this album, so much so, that between the raspy growling and the deep and powerful clean vocals, most listeners might not immediately guess that it was the same person doing both. He could easily be described as being "Chuck Schuldiner one minute and David Gahan the next." It is just so amazing of a range that it is ridiculous. I can think of very few metal vocalists who display a range of this level of extremity. Best of both worlds at its best, if I do say so myself. Also, as I have mentioned in a number of my other reviews on other bands' albums, the prominent use of keyboards in pretty much every song always earns a gold metal in my book. The use of keyboards with metal in general, let alone in more extreme subgenres such as in this case, is something that is hardly even a blink the eyes of most young people today, especially in America - probably due to all the brainwashing garbage that they are constantly force-fed, but that is another story. As far as the other instrumental parts go, nothing but praise can be given to all contributions. The drumming is instense and dynamic, demonstrating sheer mobility, endurance and stamina. The guitar work is insanely complex, with the light usage of acoustic guitar lines in some of the songs to accompany the overwheling power of the usual electric guitar riffs and solos. The bass guitar remains prominent in many areas as well, as an instrument which, I feel, is very much taken for granted in many genres of music in general. Like with any quality band that works together as a team, Dark Tranquilly set a perfet example with this album. One cannot help but appreciate the classically-inspired piano lines from the song "Auctioned." I played this song for my mom once, and she said she really liked it a lot, and even went so far as to agree that it reminded her of Depeche Mode, considering the fact that it is one the few songs on this album in which the harsh vocals are completely omitted. Songs such as "There In" and "Nether Novas" are prime examples of the balance between heaviness and melody, with regards to both Stanne's vocal range and the shifts in volume and tempo. I often like to describe "Undo Control" as sounding like a mash-up of Chuck Schuldiner, David Gahan and Christina Aguilera in the same song, with the guest appearance of the female vocalist. People are always very intrigued whenever I utter such a description. "Day to End" is the song that, if I did not know better, I would have easily mistaken for a classic Depeche Mode song, especially with the electronic elements being the forefront for roughly the first half of the song. The very thought of that is simply mind-boggling. All in all, I consider this album to be one of Dark Tranquillty's best albums ever. It defines the perfect balance between heaviness and melody, and puts all that simplistic, generic, no-edge metalcore nonsense to shame. If you like quality metal that effectively bridges the gap between sheer heaviness and new-wave-esque melodies, then you really need to pick up this album without delay, no questions asked. You will not regret it in the least bit. \m/\m/ ... show more
