If you've played clarinet, you understand this joke (and it's relation to reeds!): How many clarinetists does it take to change a lightbulb? The answer - who knows...but they'll go through boxes and boxes of lightbulbs looking for just the right one! I've played clarinet for over four decades...mostly soprano, but also alto and bass. I've played saxophones. Playing the saxophone takes effort at the highest echelons of musical performance, but it is a relatively easy instrument to start playing as a beginner. Playing a clarinet, however, is like joining the priesthood; you must first sacrifice the rest of your life to pursue this path, and just when you think you're 'getting it', you have to sacrifice more. For some of us, clarinet is worth it; for me, there's nothing else like it, not even the saxophone (though playing the clarinet DOES make playing a sax...and most other woodwinds... fairly easy). What the Nuvo Dood does is make that first step EASY. I can see this nifty little instrument luring a lot of people in the clarinet direction. I purchased this because I wanted a small musical instrument to take motorcycle camping. I was originally looking at harmonicas, ukuleles, and various percussion instruments, but then settled on the idea of a "camping clarinet". It made sense, since I've played clarinet for so long. However, a regular clarinet wouldn't hold up to the abuse it would see out on the dusty trails we have here is the western USA. The Nuvo Dood, however, seems rugged and should take the abuse just fine. And even if it gets damaged or destroyed, it's only $30 (as of Dec. 2023), so it's super affordable to replace. When I opened the Amazon package after delivery, the Nuvo Dood was nicely contained in an internal box, and inside of that box was soft case containing the instrument. It came with two synthetic reeds, with strengths of 1 and 1.5. The Dood is some sort of plastic, but it feels like a "good plastic" and not a "cheap plastic". The mouthpiece cap, bell, and finger keys are a silicone material that feels good and seems rugged. The reed is held to the mouthpiece by a nifty little clamping mechanism. So far, so good... The first time I played the instrument, I was shocked. The tone is superb for such a simple instrument. While it wasn't quite the same as a regular clarinet, it's close enough for a 'camping clarinet'. It's one octave, and fully chromatic. It's in the key of C, which is perfect for this sort of instrument, particularly if you'll be playing with others; if it were in the key of Bb like a regular soprano clarinet, you'd really want the extra finger keys for playing in remote keys. Within minutes I had this baby all figured out and was having fun cranking out tunes. And it sounded GREAT. Camping trips are going to be more fun now. Highly, highly recommend. And if you're a flute or saxophone player, they have those, too...

I love this. It actually has a nicer sound than a real clarinet that I bought here with really good feedback. Its convenient and comfortable to use although you do need to have patience when you try blowing at first. You need to blow strong, make sure the reed is aligned well and dont give up. Tip: if you cover the thumb part underneath partilly, you will get higher notes. Good luck!

Nuvo Dood, Black (N430DBBK) is neither a toy, nor serious instrument. It can be used to play music and is fun to use. The plastic reed that comes with it is terrible. The reed needs to be replaced regardless of how you intend to use this instrument. You can't use the reed with small children or inexperienced players because of how stiff, lifeless, and unforgiving it is. You can't use the reed with experienced players because...well, they know better than to try and use it. Once you get a good quality reed, it'll play well and be fun to play whether you're just starting out or just messing about.

This is the "Nuvo Dood". Nuvo does make a recorder, but this is the "Nuvo Dood", not the "Nuvo Recorder". This one uses a reed. It comes with 2 synthetic reeds, which are better than most. They are 1 and 1.5 strength. (You may find you need a 2 to get the two upper notes to play in tune without wavering when you first try, although practice, proper mouth shape and only opening the upper holes will get it to sound properly.) The reeds are plastic/synthetic, and one of the better sounding synthetics I've tried. (Some plastic reeds really should not be sold, but these are very good.) The reed is designed to make positioning it very easy. The reed does not need wetting, which means, unlike a clarinet with standard reed, I can keep it on my desk and pick it up anytime and play. This is a small instrument, designed for children to learn on, but not just a toy. This is a nice instrument for children, although those upper notes are hard for a beginner to make sound right when using the soft reeds. It is made to be simple and upkeep free, so as to be easy for children, but I bought it for myself. I play clarinet and other instruments, including recorders and the Maui Xaphoon. This is similar to a clarinet in some ways, in that it has a reed mouthpiece. It is about the size as a recorder, has similar fingering, but has covered holes, making the fingering easier. It is somewhat similar to a Xaphoon or Chalumeau, but with covered holes, and easier to play. I've tried several other "Little Sax" type instruments, and some are unplayable, while this one is a delight.

I've never played a reed instrument in my life, but I wanted to give this a try to practice my embouchure since it had such good reviews. It was really easy to pick it up and play some melodies within an hour or so! It's a great value for the money, and it sounds pretty good.

If you want to try a Reed instrument for short money, or bing it camping, this is for you. Same fingering as a soprano recorder so the learning curve isn’t too steep once you get the embouchere. I just bang away at it, but my daughter plays clarinet and can make this instrument sound great!

Es muy fácil de usar y se adecua muy bien para los niños, conociendo que el clarinete requiere mucho más trabajo inclusive para no romper tantas cañas al inicio. Se requiere menos fuerza de aire para hacerlo sonar y con una digitación bastante practica y sencilla
