  • Indispensable!
Format: Paperback
It's early yet -- I've only had the book a few days, but I've already learned a couple of helpful tricks! The coolest trick so far was learning how to split the tap-type keyboard when it appears, so that it's easy to thumb-type while holding the iPad (regular size especially) in your hands. Biersdorf tries to hard to be linguistically cool, hip, slangy and with-it. She does not seem to want to explain things that could be explained while she's on a subject. For instance, how does one delete browser-bookmarked icons? They don't come up with delete-x's and jiggle like the app icons do. In many cases, the book's illustrations need to be larger: some of the text in these graphics are simply too tiny to read. There is an astonishing lot to learn about with iPads, and she does give useful explanations, although many of them could be clearer and more detailed. The slick stock and color pictures are no substitute for the large clear text type in the Pogue-written books, and she is certainly not entertaining the way Pogue is, which certainly makes "the medicine go down." I may come back later to revise this review. Otherwise, I await with interest the reviews of other users. So far, I withhold final judgment. UPDATE 8/31/13: I am happy to report that the book -- despite its shortcomings -- has become more and more valuable over time. If you want to get the most out of your iPad, this book is a must. ... show more

  • A necessary accessory to an already superb instrument
Format: Paperback
The iPad is an amazing instrument. The many features and apps for it are mind boggling. This manual is a great help in adding to one's knowledge as well as a help in overcoming problems that can arise. It goes with me on the road and vacations.

  • Best reference
I have tried several books on the iPad Air and I found this to be the most comprehensive. I am fairly familiar with the Windows world but new to the Apple environment. This book takes the view that it is a reference manual where you look up something you want to find out about rather than just tutorials and visualizations. It always seems that I find most tutorials cover one specific procedure but what I need is slightly different and it is therefore of little help. Sit down with this book and go through all the chapters and you will "know" the iPad. ... show more

  • Needs more explanations of apps
Some of the apps, such as Media Gallery and Photos are difficult to use. More information about the more comman apps should be included. The book also needs to be updated to include more information on the Gen 2 Kindle Fire

  • Great If You Are New To Apple
Format: Paperback
As a newcomer to Apple products and software, I found this very useful in many situations. It's written very clearly, and the author/ and editor seem to understand their audience. It's a useful resource for those not familiar with Apple terms, operating systems, and features.

  • Another Great Missing Manual
Format: Paperback
Another very well written manual in the missing manual series. A great reference book for those times when I want to do something on the iPad that I know can be done, but can't figure out how. I sent one to my sister when she got an iPad and had never used one before. She let me know how great it was for helping her learn to use it. Definitely recommend it. ... show more

  • Great for Newbies!
Format: Paperback
Being a senior, who has never owned an iPad before, this was a must for me. I'm so glad that I found this manual! It's been so helpful and I'm amazed at how much I can do on my iPad mini 2. I'll admit, that I'm not all that tech savvy, so for me, I had a lot to learn. So glad that I got this book. Thanks! ... show more

  • rating for "The Missing Manual"
Format: Paperback
What the manual offers is excellent. However, it doesn't give any small tips which make using the ipad so much easier. Earlier I had downloaded a manual which was full of small tips. But when my ipad crashed, I lost that manual and have not been able to retrieve it. I was hoping that this manual would deal with some of that. But I do not wish to take away from the effectiveness of this book because that which it offers is very good. I do recommend it. ... show more
