This is an extended and detailed adaptation of the novella Carmilla (written in 1872), but focuses more on the ways in which society forces the protagonist into a prison of her own making. The novel is atmospheric, and an easy read, but it really explores the theme of hunger and being alive. Hunger as desire, hunger as satiation, hunger as a way to feel belonging are the three different axes that intersect on the crumbling marriage that Lenore (the protagonist) has carefully constructed with her transactional husband. Although some of Lenore's self-pity and despair drags the plot, and Carmilla herself becomes more of an omen rather than a physical being, the novel still carries momentum and suspicion to push the reader along. This is not my usual genre of reading, but I enjoyed how immersive it felt. ... show more

I loved seeing Lenore's character development, and the scenery was beautifully written. I also loved that she kept some things a little mysterious, the answer is there but it's not just laid out plainly for you. I only wish there was more between Carmilla and Lenore. I didn't care for their relationship at all in the first half of the book, I wish we got more romantic scenes in the second half. ... show more

I rented this book on Libby at first then decided to purchase the book so I can have more time with it. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– This book follows Lady Lenore after she and her husband come across Carmilla's wrecked carriage on their way to their new property called Nethershaw. Their lives are turned upside down as they invite Carmilla to stay with them and everyone is affected. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– I thought this book was boring and was full of filler content. I thought the premise was great but I couldn't see where the feminism was located in this book. I still saw a lot of violence against women, especially from the FMC's husband to the FMC. I'm not sure how I feel about Carmilla and feel that she was a bitch at some points when speaking to the FMC. She wasn't even at the home for a lot of the novel toward the end. I'm not sure how I feel about the effect she had on the FMC, even when she wasn't physically there. I also didn't like Cora either but I'm not the type of person who can spend a lot of time in someone else's presence without feeling a certain sense of annoyance. I'm very introverted by nature so to spend as much time with Cora as the FMC did, I know I wouldn't have lasted as long as the FMC did. I feel bad for the FMC at the end of the day after everything she went through in this novel. I'm glad she got a "good" ending, even if it's ambiguous. I don't want to spoil the end of the book for anyone but I wouldn't necessarily consider this book to have your typical HEA for Carmilla and the FMC. I think that's the saddest part for me and it's one of the reasons I'd hesitate to recommend this book. If you want a good gothic vampire novel meant for adults and not teenagers, I'd say go for this one. However, if you want an HEA at the end, I'd skip this book entirely. Yikes! ... show more

Hungerstone by Kat Dunn felt especially sentimental to me. As a woman who relates more to this book than most, not just for its gothic atmosphere, but for the way it explores desire, repression, and the ache of wanting something you’re told you shouldn’t. This story leans into a dark, lush horror, but beneath the blood and stone is a deeply emotional story about identity and longing. I loved how the sapphic elements are handled with intensity and tenderness rather than spectacle. The relationships feel charged and dangerous in the best way, mirroring the gothic setting itself. There’s something incredibly validating about seeing queer desire portrayed as powerful and transformative, even when it’s messy and frightening. Hungerstone is moody, haunting, and unapologetically queer. It’s the kind of book that made me feel seen. Not just as a reader of horror, but as a woman whose love exists outside the norm. A beautifully unsettling read that lingered with me long after I set the book back on my shelf. ... show more
