  • The little beast that COULD!
Style: 4Ah Battery and Charger Pattern Name: soil tiller cultivator
I owned a gas tiller for years, but got tired of the headaches related to ethanol gas in simple carbs- it just kills them. So, after much debate, I decided to chance this little machine. MAN what a pleasant surprise! It tills through raw lawn (grass still growing) like butter, and even kicks out rocks etc. just like my 5hp gas one did! Granted, it doesn't till as deep, but that's not a problem- I'm only trying to restart a garden about 8x8, along with cleaning up around some other areas here and there where plants/shrubs have been moved. This machine is so light I can just pick it up and carry it where I want. The tires allow it to roll, but it's quicker to just pick it up! Those same tires also seem to limit the depth of cut a little, but you could easily remove them and get a little deeper- but there's really no need. Just like any tiller will, vines and roots will bind around the tines, but a flat head screwdriver and a couple minutes of poking cures that darn quick & easy. I've owned a LOT of tools over the years, and sometimes one really does impress with its simplicity, usefulness, and ability to do the job. This little beast is one of them- enough so I ordered another for my daughter at her house. ... show more

  • Fine machine-I would buy it again.
Style: 4Ah Battery and Charger Pattern Name: soil tiller cultivator
This electric cultivator is just what I was looking for. The battery power is sufficient, more than 30 minutes, which is longer than my back will last. The tiller is light weight and easy to carry. The transport wheels are stable and easy to roll. I am discarding a 2008 craftsman tiller with a 4 stroke engine. I paid over $300 for the old machine, this one was $250. The old machine doesn't owe me anything. I can't find tines for it and now the engine is getting hard to start. This electric is easy to use, I can get parts for it and there is no starting problems. I've had larger rototillers before and they also got vines and other things wrapped around the tines. I use a hooked linoleum knife to cut debris out of the tines. Most of the soil I till is loose so the job goes quickly with this machine. The battery takes 90 minutes or so to charge from almost dead. I would buy it again. ... show more

  • The Cultivator is good; the packaging and instructions poor
Style: Tool Only Pattern Name: soil tiller cultivator
First, it is a cultivator, not a tiller. If you are needing to bust up large swaths of sod or rocky root-bound soil, borrow your neighbor's Troy-Bilt rototiller. However, I tested this on soil that had been a former lawn and was surprised at how powerful it was and it did a remarkably good job. You are not going to get too deep with this machine, perhaps 8 to 10 inches. This is sufficient for my needs in working with our relatively sandy soil here. Now the cons: Greenworks still hasn't figured out how to properly package this machine for shipping. Many reviews over the years have said this. My machine came with tears and repair taping on the box. I found one clinch pin on my garage floor where the box had been placed and found that I was missing a felt washer. My local hardware store came to my rescue. The instructions regarding installation of the tines are wrong. I am reasonably handy and figured it out. But purchasers shouldn't have to overcome erroneous instructions. If Greenworks wants us to rely on the pictures, they should be clear and simple (think IKEA pictographs). The instructions should be explicit about use of the extra clinch pins. The reviews showed purchasers had a lot of confusion about positioning of the handle. In response to my question, Greenworks said to install the handle as directed and not upside down as some reviewers suggested. I did that and made sure the wheels (with three different positions) were installed so I could easily lift the handle to get the tines to dig into the soil. That relationship should have been made explicit. In summary, useful tool now that I have overcome the instructions and found a substitute for the missing washer. ... show more

  • Works way better than I thought it would, even with rocks!
Style: 4Ah Battery and Charger Pattern Name: soil tiller cultivator
I bought this to make the dirt in my garden plot more workable, after a day for trying to till it up myself with a hand hoe and just about killing myself, I wanted something easier. I looked multiple places online and knew I wanted a battery operated one. I didn’t want to deal with a gas engine, and my plot is to far from the house for a corded one. This is the only kind that was listed on multiple site’s top ten that ws battery powered, and I already have a 40v weed whacked from green works, so the battery should be interchangeable. They were, even though my current battery was 2ah and this tiller comes with a 4ah. The 4ah definitely gives more run time, but having the other smaller one is helpful as a backup. This tiller tore through the top layer of clay in my garden like it was sand. It was amazing. Even tore through quite a few raspberry root wanderers that were trying to invade. I am so happy with the amount of work I can get done without breaking my back. I then took it to my landscaping around the house- which previously was all rocks, and the previous owners left a lot of rocks in there to keep the soil loose, and this tiller still tears it up with no problem. Only once did I have a rock get stuck in just the right place and I had to get a rubber mallet to help me get the tines off and knock the rock out. Each time I stop it I’m amazed at how many roots are wrapped around the tines, but the performance doesn’t change so I have no idea they’re even there! It’s perfect size to get in between my existing plants, but still big enough to get a big job done 1000x faster than by hand. It’s great to mix up the old mulch and mix in new compost. You can also hold it in one place for a bit to dig yourself a nice loose hole for planting something. I even tore through some grassy areas to expand one landscaped area into my yard more. Assembly didn’t take long, however I never figured out what the ring pins were for, so those are being kept in the garage. I will say it is pretty heavy, but not when you’re using it, only if you want to pick it straight up out of the dirt instead of rolling it on the wheels, which I’ve had to do a few times to get over the top of some garden edging. Overall I’m extremely happy with the back breaking work I’ve been able to get done solo without the back breaking part! I need a leaf blower this season, and I’ll def get a green works one that’s compatible with my 40v batteries, such a neat system to have! ... show more
