    • Made in Japan, fit great
These gaskets worked great on my 2001 Subaru Legacy GT. The head gaskets have 3 layers of stainless steel and was of better quality than the OEM head gasket I removed. Surprisingly they were made in Japan. This does not contain head bolts, I reused my existing ones (which is fine on these Subaru's, so long as the bolts aren't damaged). The tightening sequence is: Step 1.....22 ft/lbs Step 2.....51 ft/lbs Step 3.....loosen all 180 in reverse order of tightening Step 4.....loosen all an additional 180 Step 5..... bolts 1 and 2 only 25 ft/lbs Step 6.....bolts 3,4,5,6 132 in/lbs Step 7.....tighten all bolts 80 to 90 degrees Step 8.....tighten all bolts 80 to 90 degrees the order is of the bolts is: TOP 316 524 BOTTOM I used a Haynes manual and the web to guide my repair. I'm not sure if I can post a link to the site I used, but google search: "2000 my obw in car head gasket replacement". I got some great tips from there. Timing is easy (on the SOHC engine), just line up the 3 notches (not the arrows). The notches are not at top dead center, they are at middle center. This confused me at first but that's the way it is. I was able to do it with out removing the engine, but it was hard to get the heads in position with out messing up the new gasket. I used rubber bands to hold the bolts and had someone put the gasket in after I lined it up. I had to hit the drivers side fender with a hammer to put a small dent to allow for the #4 bolt to have enough clearance. You can't see the dent with everything back in the engine. I bought this kit as part of an engine transplant job for a 2002 Subaru with a 2.5 L engine. I don't have a way to assess the quality of the parts, but Fel-Pro is a respected brand and all is well after several hundred miles. The head gaskets in the kit are of multi-layer steel (MLS) construction, and the results of my research indicated that they were an upgrade to the occasionally troublesome OEM gaskets that came with Subarus of this vintage. All of the components I used (head gaskets, intake gaskets, exhaust gaskets, valve cover gaskets and grommets, valve parts (used by machine shop when refurbishing the heads)) fit well and seemed to be of high quality. There were some parts (throttle body gaskets, fuel injector gaskets) that I recognized but didn't use, and others that I didn't recognize, so I have a small stock of unused parts. Perhaps these kits are designed to be used by professional mechanics who would presumably know what all the parts are for, but I would have appreciated some type of identifying information. My overall impression is that the kit has every gasket that would be needed to do a complete gasket job on an engine. This kit has everything you need to do the head gaskets, and then some. Great set. My mechanic recommended fel-pro, so I went with them instead of a pricier six star set. I am very happy with the results. All gaskets sealed well and it was nice having a few more gaskets than needed. I'm sure the extras are for slightly different applications than my own. ... show more

Really high-quality parts. Nice MLS head gaskets that are so much more robust than the leaky originals. Caution: if you have leaky head gaskets, and you're not having your heads resurfaced, don't hold the gaskets responsible for future leaks. However, if you are an informed, risk-taker, and insist on not resurfacing your heads, these gaskets really seem like they'd make a really good attempt and not leaking anyway. I called Fel-Pro to get a list of everything included, because there is a lot and you can't easily tell what some of it is. The head gasket set is 3 metal layers. Seems very strong and upgraded compared to the stock single metal. 2000 miles so far and no problems. Lets see what 65,000 mile will do. 2001 Subaru Impreza RS have a very bad head gasket problem. Hopefully with a good head machine I should get 120,000 on this set. Few parts in the set are not needed for this year but maybe yours. Great value for the price. Will buy again, only time will tell? Did not buy new head bolts. All Subaru pros say no need. ... show more

This kit had the highest quality gaskets where it counted and had the cheaper ones where it wouldn't matter. To put it simply, they saved cost by cutting quality where quality would not be missed. The MLS gaskets are top notch and installed without any issues. Intake and Exhaust gaskets functioned flawlessly. I now have a 200,000 mile subaru that doesn't leak any fluids whatsoever. ... show more

If you are looking at this gasket set, you've probably got the dreaded head gasket leak common to this era Subaru. FelPro didn't just punch out a generic head gasket for this set, they really did their homework. It is a coated MLS (multilayer steel) with a bonded sealing ring. The set is very complete with valve seals, o-rings and some gaskets I couldn't even guess their function. Only have about 5k miles since rebuild, so I can't testify to it's longevity, but I'm hopeful it will outlast the car. ... show more
