  • Form-fitting comfort and safety; communication and breathability are slightly compromised
What is it about this red, orange, and yellow mirror-tinted lens that I like so much? The fact that it is hard to fog up the anti-fog thermal lens? The fact that it has tool-less lens change abilities, making it easily detachable with the press of buttons and a pull of a clip? The fact that they are interchangeable (the option I chose did not come with an extra lens) and therefore renewable? The fact that it has unmatched visibility with an optically correct Horizon 290 degree lens system? Maybe I just like how it looks? I don’t really know. I don’t even play paintball to tell the truth, for whatever reason I just like this high-end goggle/mask. I first saw the Dye i5 Fire goggle on YouTube when a guy nicknamed Drac favored it on his channel. A lot of people in Singapore (like Jet Blaster, if I am not mistaken) are also fond of the Dye goggles. While wearing it I can say that the quick release foam is very soft and comfy. It is advertised as Tool-less Glue-less Foam Replacement with Soft Touch Multi-Layer Foam (whatever they mean by ‘soft compression-formed fleece wrapped foam.’ All I can say is that they said ‘foam’ one too many times); I don’t know the science details but I only care about how it feels anyway, and the inch of special padding around the eyes, bridge of your nose, and compression-formed ear protection (with lightweight, moisture-wicking flexible comfort) feels great. Behind the foam layer on the top of the mask is a grill air vent for the hot air to escape through. It has a GSR pro strap (a gear locking head harness) that is supposedly the biggest difference from the previous model, the i4. I can turn the knob clockwise to tighten and counter-clockwise to loosen it with no issues or fuss. For those who care about tiny details, loosening it makes louder ratcheting clicks. You can hear everything around you surprisingly well despite the full ear protection because of the “Sound catch” design that encourages auditory clarity. The only complaints I have about the Dye i5 are the breathability and communication clarity: The mouth area does not exactly disperse all the heat from your breath, nor does it allow clear communication (SCREAM; multi directional venting) like it claims, but it is comparable to most of the masks that I have worn. There are attachment points for a heads-up POV camera mount system, although I do not have a GoPro (yet). It also came with a little plastic piece for compatibility with what Dye calls an “eVOKE SYSTEM” (sold separately), but I have no plans to buy it use it (but hey, I could if I wanted to). The mask comes with a protective drawstring transport bag with Dye’s theme on it “Designed for the Art of Winning.” I suppose winning is an art form now. In conclusion, the Dye i5 Fire is a high end mask/goggle that looks good and feels great. It’s short list of flaws are it’s modest breathability, muffled communication, and minimalist coverage (my forehead and neck are exposed, but there are neck guards and visors available to specifically handle covering those areas). This mask should work with any one of the different shoot-em-up hobbies: paintball, air-soft, Nerf war, battle tag archery, etc.. I personally use it for Foam Blaster parties that my cousin and I host in Honolulu, Hawaii. I can totally recommend this mask because I can see the quality in it’s design and build and IMHO the multitude of good qualities that it has clearly outweigh it’s flaws. It’s claim to full coverage protection is limited to the areas of what a mask should cover, and I believe it does that well. It’s anatomical fit and function allows terrific form-fitting comfort and safety, and that alone is priceless. But above all... just look at it... it’s awesome. I like how it looks. ... show more

  • Expensive, but also the best mask on the market.
this mask is ridiculously expensive, with that said it also fits perfectly on a normal size head. The dial strap on the back is genius and more manufacturers should use this method of securing the mask to your head. The visors can be swapped with existing i4 lenses which is excellent. the foam is also replaceable making this mask a great investment. The camera mount accessory is a plus and works great for mounting a gopro session if you have a tripod mount for it. ... show more

  • Features and comforts
I definitely needed an upgrade for a mask. This Dye i5 really fit the bill for what I was looking for. With the ease of lense changing, the quick adjustability of the straps, the build quality, thermal lense, comfort of wear, and the bad ass look, it was worth the price.

  • Hardly any useful changes from i4 (2011) model
Hardly any useful changes from i4 (2011) model, price is higher though (120 vs 180!). Same ridiculous gap between the lens and the mask's body, if you get hit in the forehead, paint runs down via crack into inside of the lens! Same pathetic Velcro circles to hold down ear protection, which become separated after few uses in heat and moisture. Better have iron fingers to press down on the lens release notches, very difficult. Perhaps consider doing some functional improvements? Considering price vs features, there are less expensive, better functional alternatives. ... show more
