  • I Loved My Breville. Then My Laziness Evolved...
Style: Plus Silver
I bought the De’Longhi Magnifica Plus as a transition away from the Breville Barista Express, which I genuinely loved. Some enthusiasts would argue the Breville makes better espresso and honestly that may be true. It also required daily effort, frequent cleaning, and emotional availability. Eventually, my laziness reached its final form and I chose convenience without sacrificing quality. This machine heats up in about 30 seconds, makes strong, consistently great espresso, and gets used multiple times a day. The UI is incredibly simple. No fiddling, no rituals, no drama. Press a button, get excellent espresso. The milk frothing is smooth and reliable, and the cleaning effort is almost suspiciously low. It automatically rinses itself on startup and shutdown (just make sure the drip tray is in place). About once a week, I rinse the brew group under water and pop it back in. When it tells me to descale, I descale it. Total maintenance time is maybe 5 minutes per week. For comparison, my Breville took about 5 minutes of cleaning per day, plus another 3–5 minutes per drink. I loved the coffee. I simply chose not to be an unpaid barista. Pros: - Practically self-cleaning - Very simple, intuitive UI - Strong, consistent, great-tasting espresso - Heats up fast (~30 seconds) - Excellent milk frothing - Tons of drink options - Doppio+ mode = a very strong shot (~18g) Cons: - Bean hopper could use a gasket seal - Build quality isn’t ultra-premium At this price, it’s an easy recommendation. If you want great espresso and have accepted that convenience is now a core value, this machine is a no-brainer. I loved my Breville. I just love not working for my coffee more. Five stars! ... show more

  • Just get it!
Style: Next Silver
De'Longhi Magnifica Evo Next Engineer and Coffee Drinker's Review In totality the Magnifica Evo Next is well Engineered and constructed. It presents physical and control features well considered, and arranged to offer ease and pleasure of use. Cleaning and replenishment is not a chore with this device. The Evo Next was designed to encourage coffee brewing rather than just look pretty. Whole weight is substantial enough to suggest quality and to maintain its place on a counter, yet the Magnifica easily slides around for access and cleaning. Evo Next size is substantial enough to minimize refilling of water and beans, and to limit cleaning to a reasonable frequency. Height is suited for fit under upper cabinets, using a good compromise of storage capacity versus easy access. There is adequate clearance to refill the coffee bean hopper from above, while providing for many cups before replenishment. The water carafe seems small, yet it is well considered by being tall and deep enough to hold a full container of water from my Zero Water pitcher. Front access is the best choice I have seen among coffee brewers, and this design slides out easily yet feels substantial and of a precise fit. This feature is indicative of good design choices. The drip tray and grounds hopper are located together in the best location possible for easy removal to empty and clean. Upon purchase a few months ago I removed all the components to inspect for damage, fit, and familiarity. Packing was substantial and the machine arrived in tact. All the components seem durable and substantial, and fit tightly and precise, while being easy to access. Upon removal of the Brewing Unit from the right side access I was impressed by the quality and fit of this principle assembly. This component is indicative of high quality and good choices by the Engineers involved in this design. I have owned many coffee makers of all tiers and this is at the top for a residential machine. The burr grinder feature was a prerequisite for me to consider this machine. And it has not failed to impress me these past months. I set the coarse of grind once and have found no need to change that setting. The Evo Next grinds as does my counter-top Burr Grinder, and gives repeatable results. The noise level is not a factor when beans are ground, and the reservoir is large enough to limit refills to perhaps twice a week, even with our frequent use. I find both the Ground Hopper (my term) and Drip Tray to be easy to clean, and I do that routine daily for good housekeeping. The grounds go into a bucket for composting, and the container is rinsed out with warm water then dried with a paper towel. Removing the two top plates of the Drip Tray is easy enough and a daily rinse is part of my routine, with a light soap wash once a week to keep it from becoming slimy. I have yet to clean the water carafe, but that should be an easy task. The carbon filter was replaced once so far and that is a simple matter. I drink nothing but Zero Water filtered water, and as such the Evo Next considers our refills as 'soft' water, so far precluding descaling. Although the Zero does not remove Calcium or other minerals they are stable in the water and will take forever to precipitate. Overall it is a pleasure to use and maintain the Magnifica Evo Next. We now drink more coffee than before, and enjoy it to a higher degree. We benefit from direct grind brewing like any good barista offers at a coffee shop. And we can prepare a wide range of coffee and latte drinks with ease. I've owned and used conventional latte machines and while they are fun the amount of work required to brew at home discourages frequent use. We use this De'Longhi more often than any other coffee brewer we have ever owned. ... show more

  • What the Puck?
Style: -Start Silver
I am not sure what makes me more upset- that this well-known company put out a coffee maker that can't make a decent cup of coffee. Or that I wasted SO much money on it. The most basic function of this machine should be to make a simple cup of coffee. Good luck with that. The size of the "puck" of coffee for whatever you do with this machine is always the same. So if you want a bigger cup of coffee-the amount of coffee grinds used is the same as the small cup. The only difference is how much water it uses. That means that your 12 oz cup of coffee is weaker than the 8 oz. To adjust the size of the cup you want you press the coffee button until it blinks. You wait at the machine until your cup fills to where you want it and then you press the coffee button again. This then becomes your default (size) cup setting. Great right? Except that the next person who wants coffee has no idea what size of cup they are getting. If I brew a small cup and my husband wants a 12 oz he's getting an 8 oz unless he uses the same process. And his 12 oz cup is weak. De Longhi made the strength of the coffee a seperate interface you can easily see. But somehow neglected to make selecting the size of the cup and the setting clear. And sure- you can make two cups but guess what? No normal mug(s) fit under the two nozzles side by side. Ergo the two-cup function requires you to put a single large container of some sort under the nozzle and then pour from there into two mugs. Making two cups of coffee for ourselves each morning is a chore. We ran through a ridiculous amount of bean brands to find a bean that would be strong enough for a large cup and not taste terrible when a smaller cup is brewed or a weaker setting is selected. There is also no way to know how many beans are in the machine aside from a visual above it. Often you wind up starting a cup of coffee only to hear the dreaded "empty" whirling noise you'll come to recognize. If you're not standing near the machine to stop it still brews the cup. Don't forget the container you have to put under the machine for every on/off cycle. It cleans itself with water both when it is powered on and when powered off. This means you run through a LOT of water. If you have hard water like we have you'll need to descale and replace the filters constantly. And to descale is a 15 STEP PROCESS. This is not an exaggeration. We made it less than two months between descales last time. You CANNOT disable the auto-shut off. You can only adjust the amount of time that passes before it shuts itself off every day. (While there is a vessel under the machine to catch this extra water it fills quickly and you have to empty it often. Even De Longhi suggests putting a seperate container under it to catch this bypass water.) What about the rest of the functions? Mercifully espresso is good. You can get a good cappuccino about 7 out of 10 times. Often you just get an espresso with a lot of hot milk and zero froth. Again you can't adjust the size of the cappuccino because the puck size is always the same. I brew a small cup of coffee before running the cappuccino to get a remotely decent size amount. We have to leave the instruction manual out because this thing has so many codes and lights to interpret. "Simple One Touch" is anything but. We are both technically savvy people- it's ridiculous. We recently went on a vacation where our hotel both had the most basic, old fashioned Cusinart coffee makers. Filter. Drip. We were SO happy we could finally, easily, get a decent cup of coffee. We have guests visiting soon. I plan to buy another cheap coffee maker to use rather than try to have a college course on making a cup of coffee if we aren't around. Ridiculous. I splurged on this thing and (clearly) I regret it. ... show more
