In laboratory testing, the Precisionist-class movement has been shown to be three times more accurate than standard quartz. This proprietary manufactured movement, including the signature floating second hand, also offers a resistance to gravitational error that makes it superior in performance to any mechanical watch on the market.Summary of FeaturesPrecision timing to 1/1,000th of a second12-hour chronograph functionOne of the world’s most accurate movements – accurate to within seconds a yearPrecisionist-class torsional resonator movement proven in laboratory testing to be three times more accurate than standard quartzStainless steel case and braceletCurved mineral crystalMultiple-layer black carbon fiber, blue and silver dialYellow continuously sweeping second handLuminous hour and minute handsLuminous markersCalendar windowTachymeterScrew-backScrew-down crownWater resistant to 300 metersAbout BulovaIn 1875, Joseph Bulova, a 23-year-old immigrant, set up shop in New York City and a legendary American watch brand was born. Since then, Bulova has stood proudly in the vanguard of timekeeping innovation, committed to the legacy of creativity and excellence established by its founder.A pioneering force in the industry, Bulova transformed how watches were worn and how time was perceived, registering over 50 patents as he and his company built a record of creativity including the first full lines of men’s (1919) and ladies’ (1924) wristwatches, the first clock/radio (1928) and the first electric clock (1931). To ensure the utmost in precision, in 1920, Bulova even established its own observatory – located atop its New York skyscraper. With that same spirit of innovation, following World War II, determined “to serve those who served us,” Bulova established The Bulova School of Watchmaking, using new and unique methods to train disabled veterans for positions in the watch and jewelry industry. Then, in 1960, Bulova changed timekeeping forever with the revolutionary Accutron, the world’s first fully electronic watch. An integral component of U.S. space technology, Accutron timing was used on 46 NASA missions, including Apollo XI, the first lunar landing (1969).Today, as one of the world’s most recognized brands, Bulova has expanded across the globe, with four separate watch brands, Bulova, Bulova AccuSwiss, Bulova Accutron II and Caravelle New York, as well as the award-winning Bulova Clocks. The signature Bulova brand provides an extensive selection of watches for every occasion, crafted of the finest materials, including 315L surgical grade stainless steel, diamonds, mother-of-pearl, carbon fiber, top-quality leather and Bulova’s proprietary Duramic nylon/ceramic composite, and powered by Precisionist-class quartz, automatic and quartz movements. An industry leader in diamond watch styling, with the new Diamond Gallery offering exquisite designs in stainless steel with sapphire crystals, Bulova is also known for Precisionist, featuring Bulova’s proprietary Precisionist-class quartz torsional resonator movement for accuracy to within seconds per year, the Marine Star collection, combining high-performance sports timekeeping with superior durability and water resistance to a minimum of 100 meters, and a comprehensive selection of classic styles, each with a three-year limited warranty. • Decent, but not spectacular
Color: Silver-Tone/Blue dial Style: Precisionist
Obviously there can be (and is) much debate about what makes a great watch, and much of it is very personal. I don't think anyone can argue the merits of Swiss quality, nor can anyone disparage what Japanese brands are doing (or offerings from other countries, for that matter - a lot of wonderful watches in the world today, micro brands included), so, often, it comes down to just finding the watch that is wanted that serves the desired purpose. In this case, my brother was looking for this style, a blue-faced, simple and classic design that would serve as a decent dress watch for an office environment. He did not want anything super high end, but does like the "sweep" movement of mechanicals, and this quartz "Precisionist" movement, nicely packaged in a blue and silver design, definitely filled the bill, and I gave this watch as a gift to him. It is a fine example of what brands like Bulova do well in their innovations, in this instance, providing a mechanical "look" to the movement in a very reliable and accurate quartz package meaning that (as is often the case in Japanese over Swiss brands) you get a decent amount of watch for the asking price -- or certainly the current asking price here, which is about half the $300 plus of the full retail cost of this model. At just over $150, it's a pretty incredible deal, although, as I've noted in another Bulova model review, it would be nice if Bulova would step up their product line somewhat and offer sapphire crystals and better straps, for the retail cost they want. As it happens, my brother damaged the mineral crystal the first day he wore the watch, knocking the watch face accidentally against a rough surface that gouged a deep scratch in it. On showing me the damage, I told him I'd get it fixed, and I took it to a jeweler where, for about thirty bucks, I had the damaged mineral crystal replaced with a sapphire one. The watch looks far nicer (and is more immune to damage) now, and it seems frustrating that Bulova won't go the extra mile, add a few bucks on the price, and provide the quality that sapphire brings. Plus, for the asking retail of more than three hundred dollars, one certainly finds options with sapphire, standard, in other brands, so, if wanting to be considered as competing with more pricey competitors, the brand should deliver on what can be found for the price point they are asking. Otherwise, it is easy to dismiss Bulova and go for better options at the same cost. Outside of the crystal issue and the less than stellar strap, the rest of the watch is done very well, and delivers a real elegance, the watch made rich with subtle details like the beveling on the bezel, the mix of polished and satin finishes, the open design of the hands, different texturing within the dial, etc. This is where it seems odd to me that Bulova won't go further -- to put so much into what they do provide, but not upgrade the crystal or invest more in the strap just seems a confusing choice. But, what they do provide here is beautiful, particularly the chosen hue of the blue dial, which is one of the better blue dials I've seen on a dressier watch. Refinement is further achieved with the faceted silver main hour markers, used rather than numerals. Detailing is again shown in the white seconds indices around the outer dial, the silver center ring, and the silver outlined date box. The whole face is highly legible, including the date (black numerals on a white background) and the 100m water resistance is appreciated (not that this is a watch for water play, but the rating supersedes the often only 30m or 50m on many dress watches, just adding a level of confidence for wearing conditions). Honestly, at the Amazon price here of $170 or so, one would be hard pressed to find a watch so nice, especially considering the benefit of the Ultra High Frequency quartz movement which provides incredible accuracy. And, for only a few more bucks, on arrival, you can make it sapphire, and you can always switch out the strap as well, although that definitely pushes the cost over $200. Still good, for what you're getting. However, I'd be looking at other options at the full retail price, since it's just a lot of price to ask for a cheap mineral crystal and not so special strap. My brother, by the way, loves it, so it certainly was a hit, and much more so now that the crystal is upgraded (he was shocked at how slight the impact was, given the amount of damaged caused to the mineral one). So, as a gift to give, or as a watch to add to your own collection if you are a Precisionist fan, this is a good choice, hence the four stars. The missing star is just for the deficits I mentioned (crystal and strap) and it remains my hope that Bulova, with all of their wonderful innovations, will improve on those elements in the future. If this came with sapphire and a better band, I'd have gladly purchased it even at full retail, so it just seems Bulova is short-changing themselves by not upping their game a bit more. Definitely do recommend this watch, but also recommend planning on, at minimum, a crystal upgrade for increased durability and improving the overall look of the watch quite a bit. My brother is fine with the strap, but one might consider upgrading that as well, to a superior leather, and perhaps even a deployment clasp. Thanks for reading, and I hope this was helpful. ... show more

  • Unique quartz sweeping second - an eye-catcher!
Color: Two-Tone/Gray dial Style: Preciscionist
So this is it - the famous Bulova 262 kHz quartz movement with the smooth sweeping second. Finished in 2012 they announced an accuracy of 10 sec/year. Nowadays they say 5 sec/month which is quite a difference but a good value, too. But no longer HAQ (high accuracy quartz). Typically the movement achieves 2 sec/month. Due to the high quartz frequency and the sweeping second this results in a bit higher energy consumption. That was compensated with a fairly large CR2016 75 mAh battery which could reach a lifespan of 3 years. Sometimes only 2 years if the watch got some longer running time before selling or not so good temperature conditions. Thus energy consumption is technically around 0,003 mA which is 3 times higher than a normal quartz movement uses. Despite some rumours the movement uses no temperature compensation so it works best on the wrist at around 26°C/79°F. Lower temperature results in slower movement. Enough said on this. Let's talk about the watch itself: A beautiful silver/rose-gold watch with gray dial. But too much polishing. In my opinion brushing would give a more useful appearance. You see every finger print and more which is kind of annoying. A good microfiber cloth gets permanent attention. I changed the leather strap (22 mm) in the very first contact to one of my favourites although it should get more flexibility during some days of wearing. The mineral instead of a sapphire glass is a con but when it is scratchy I will let it change to a sapphire one (~40 $). Seldom to read is the huge problem of color fading and deterioration of the rose-gold hands but if you look closely and open-minded to the pictures available in the net it is fairly evident. I finally got one of the newest batch which doesn't have this problem. Buyers should be aware of it - to accept it as a personal special edition for me is not a solution. Because I like the watch, the look and especially the sweeping second I bought the blue one, too, and probably will buy the black one also. It seems availability is going to run out, so be fast. They certainly will be a good catch at around 180-200 dollars. ... show more

  • Very impressed
Color: Silver-Tone/Blue dial Style: Precisionist
Very nice watch. Good finish, mediocre strap but easily replaced. 22mm, not 20mm as described. Back says it's 100 meter water resistant but I wouldn't rely on that as it doesn't have a screw down crown. It does have a screw down back unlike the Grey dial Precisionist for sale here at $10 less which apparently has a press on back. That's a big deal! I'm not a big fan of quartz watches but I sure like this one. I have 50 mechanical/automatic watches. This Precisionest has a smoother sweeping second hand than any of them. Glad I got it when the price dropped to $179. If you can get it at that price, do so. Well worth it. ... show more
