I had a JBJ-050 chiller for my axolotl. JBJ's are supposed to the be best, right? Yeah, no. The JBJ had a weak fan, and I had to add another fan to it to keep air flowing. That created a lot of noise. This chiller has TWO internal fans, both moving quite a bit of air. They're connected to the thermostat, so they don't always run, keeping the noise levels down. Even when running, it's pretty quiet. The compressor makes as much noise as a typical mini-fridge. Nothing notable about that. The temperature display unit is easy to use and program. Its about 3-deg F 'high' on mine, there is an offset/calibration but it isn't important to me because I have a temp probe in the tank. The hose connections work well with my fluval hoses. That's commendable right there - as I had to get really creative with my JBJ to make that connection work. This was a simple hose clamp (included) and hose angle adapters with gaskets (both included). Very nice! The only bad? Even though the unit arrived in a double boxed container, placed in an amazon box (so it was triple boxed!), there was impact damage to the back of the case bending the fan vents. Not bad, but noticeable. Since this was a last minute order to replace my broken JBJ-050, I didn't ask for replacement, as I needed to use this one right away. Once I get a refund from JBJ on their broken chiller, I'll probably order another one of these as a 'backup' so if this one ever does stop working, I can immediately swap out a good one without having to do the refrigerated water change dance I had to do this week. Based on it's performance, I'd recommend this over other more expensive solutions!

I see a lot of reviews here from unhappy customers complaining about this chiller overloading their electrical circuits. They seem not to realize that the maximum current rating is listed right here on the product listing, and if they can't figure out how not to overload a circuit, that isn't a defect in this product, nor is it the company's fault. Receiving 1-star ratings due to user error is ridiculous. Pros: I bought the 160-L version, and I think it's fantastic. I grow cannabis hydroponically (specifically using Deep Water Culture), where the water reservoir needs to stay below ~72 degrees Fahrenheit to keep the root zone free of harmful bacteria. My plants were nearly killed by root rot more than once, but since adding this chiller to my system I haven't had any problems. It keeps the ~80-L reservoir as cold as I'd like—I keep it set to 13.5 degrees Celsius (56.3 degrees Fahrenheit), which usually results in a temperature reading of ~60 degrees Fahrenheit at the root zone. This is within the advertised uncertainty when also factoring in the First Law of Thermodynamics (the chiller intake and return are at the bottom of the reservoir, where the temperature is the lowest). For this reason, you should always measure the actual temperature of the water depending on the location of the intake and return are, but in general this chiller does exactly what you ask. The construction is solid, and the parts most people will need come with the purchase, including a hose, pipe fittings, o-rings, a submersible pump, etc. Personally, I wanted maximum flow through the largest possible cross-section, and it was fairly simple to remove the 3/8" fittings and replace them with 1/2" fittings (and matching tubing) that don't restrict flow at all. I imagine that full cooling may take even less time than the advertised cooling curves if you also choose to upgrade to 1/2". I also bought a separate pump to use inline rather than the less powerful submersible pump included, but I did test the included pump and it worked just fine. When trying to force less pliable tubing onto the new fittings I ended up hearing a super loud, metallic bang of internal parts, which resulted in an annoying clicking noise for the next few days. Eventually the noise went away, which seems to me to be a reflection of the resilience of this chiller. Customer service was top notch as well. They kept me appraised of every step of the (shorter than expected) overseas shipping journey, from confirmation of the regional electrical specifications to questions about changing the size of the pipe fittings. The representatives of the company were thoughtful, sincere, and always there to answer your questions or address any problems. Cons: Admittedly, the complaints about the instructions being useless are valid; however, there are also clear instructions on this product page. It's also slightly inconvenient to convert from Celsius to Fahrenheit, but complaining about that is incredibly lazy. You only need to do the conversion once, provided you aren't constantly changing the desired temperature. The message on the screen is written only with Chinese characters, but honestly it hardly matters what it says given the simplicity of operation, the small number of buttons to press, and the brief amount of time the message is shown when setting the desired temperature. --- My chiller has been running nonstop for over a month now, and it's my opinion that you should look no further to get a quality chiller for a bargain. While it isn't perfect, I think it's worth 5/5 stars nonetheless.

Ok review time. So does this product work? In short, yes, yes it does. Would I have liked a users manual and directions pamphlet? Yes, that would have been considerate,( none provided on delivery) the gaskets and hose clamps being in an after market zip lock bag was a little discerning. None the less, this product was shipped to me in working condition and does what it says. The interface is a bit confusing until you read some online instructions. About 48 hours later and your like wtf was I thinking…so simple. What have I found out? It chills a 20 gallon aquarium with an ambient temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit to 56 degrees Fahrenheit in roughly 2.5 hours with the pump set at its lowest gps with no problems. (could have even gone lower degrees F but stopped it at 56 degrees F). Would this chiller do a 40-50 gallon tank and maintain 65 degree’s with an ambient outside temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit? Yes, I believe it would. After tinkering with the control panel settings and doing some online manual/ directions searching along with 48 hours of trial and error. I’ve got my sons 20 gallon long axolotl aquarium to maintain a constant 63- 61 degrees Fahrenheit with an ambient temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit like a charm. In order to achieve this though. I had to set the thermostat to 73 degrees F with a 3 degree + - @ the F1 setting. After a little bit of bs, I would recommend this product. Would give it 5 stars if it was sent with some type of instructions and the thermostat was more accurate. This unit is also on the quite side. Impressed with that as well. Hope this review helps.
