  • Easy as Apples 🍎
I have the Apple 4K TV 1st Generation and its been pretty great for me so far in our living room. Some of the pains and quirks I've had over the years was just the remote. It wasn't the worst remote I've ever had by any means but it wasn't the greatest either. Once I found out the newer remote was released I thought I would go ahead and try this generation of the remote and see if it was better. Overall I'm very happy with the decision that I made in purchasing the newer remote and ditching the older remote. Overall I really like the feel of this remote. The size of the remote is slightly larger in my hand (which I think is a good thing). It feels really solid construction and has that Apple quality feel to it. I like now that it has the direction buttons around the click pad. One thing I always disliked about the previous generation of the remote was the fact that my thumb would feel like it was on an ice skate rink or sometimes the remote and apple tv would be have some sort of lag. I haven't had this issue ever since upgrading the remote. It's also cool that it has a power button on the upper right corner of the remote instead of it being a menu to put the Apple TV to sleep. Setup was incredibly easy. I stood fairly close to the Apple TV. Pressed and held the Back button and the Volume Up button for 2 seconds and bam, done. My other remote unpaired and the newer remote was ready to go. It's kind of unfortunate the last remote for the Apple TV was a little bit of a pain to live with and having to switch over to the newer one. I still don't see a reason for upgrading to the newer Apple TV as of yet so I feel like this is a better purchasing decision for now. ... show more

  • I should have bought it sooner.
I should have bought this updated remote sooner! My Apple TV HD remote had been sluggish for a while, even on a fresh charge. Also, the pad for swiping thru selections had started to track backwards even though I was swiping to go forward. It was frustrating. But I held off buying the new remote due to price. FINALLY I let go and spent the money on this remote and I am delighted. It works great. The buttons are a nice option, but the center, between the buttons, still allows for swiping with your thumb for navigation, which I prefer. This remote paired with my (older version) Apple TV HD effortlessly AND it automatically paired with my Sony television! This remote IS kind of ridiculously priced but truthfully I've already enjoyed using it so much that I've kind of forgotten that I paid too much,. ... show more

  • Significant upgrade over the original remote.
I have 4 apple TVs, and am considering buying one of these for all of them. I bought this as a test for our main room TV. I find the touch pad on the standard remote to be very inconsistent, especially with certain apps. I turned off the swipe/scroll feature, so I have to click the outside ring to navigate. It works so much better for fast-forwarding through commercials and that sort of thing. Just a few taps and you zip through a commercial break. Works really well with YoutubeTV, Disney, Netflix, Prime, Etc. Only downside is that they are a bit pricey. This remote is also a bit thicker than the original remote so it doesn't seem to disappear into the couch cushions quite as often. ... show more

  • The exact opposite of its predecessor
The version which originally came with my AppleTV 4K was thin, aluminum, slippy, very iffy to grip in any way, had no margin around the touchpad causing constant problems as a 'mouse' type touchpad. Literally it was the worst remote of any kind I had ever owned. This version is backwards compatible with the original 4K, just a quick resync, and resolves every single thing wrong with the original and then some. Thicker, a disc touchpad so much easier to use, and avoid hitting when you don't want. It doesn't roll in your hand, it has more controls. PERFECT! ... show more

  • 2nd Gen Apple remote
We had a functioning 1st Gen remote but my wife did not like the design of the touch pad. She really wanted the newer button and touch design. We have had the remote now for several months. My wife is happy with the newer button and touch design. Personally I feel like I was faster with the Gen 1 touch pad. I do like the dedicated on/off button on the Gen 2 remote. I actually think I preferred the voice button on the front (Gen 1) instead of the side (Gen 2). I feel like Apple REALLY missed out on an important opportunity to include the find-my-device capability in the remote because these remotes are small and the more accurate find capabilities in new phones would be super helpful. We decided to get a case for ours with an Apple air tag but your options for cases that include a slot for an air tag are more limited. It would just be an obvious upgrade if that functionality was included. We have had some issues with the voice input being flaky in that the Apple TV will capture input but then erase it once you release the button (which defeats the purpose). It never used to do that, but I can’t honestly say wherever that is the remote or some software upgrade to the Apple TV. Of course the Gen 2 remote is nicely packaged and feels well built just as you would expect from Apple. And pairing the new remote was super simple. Is it worth an upgrade if you still have a working Gen 1 remote? That depends how you feel about the Gen 1 touch pad. As far as my wife is concerned it was worth it! If you don’t have a working Apple remote at all then you might as well get the latest. ... show more
