Style: Microscope Kit
We got this for our five-year-old and seven-year-old for Christmas. Even the seven-year-old is a little too young to handle it carefully, but I think this microscope was a really smart choice. It has 4x, 10x, and 40x magnification, just like any microscope we would have used in school. It also has an option to light an object from the top, so you can magnify non-translucent objects, like a leaf or a little pile of powdered sugar (that’s what we’ve looked at so far, anyway!). We got it just for a fun gift, but as parents, so far we’re enjoying it as much as the kids! I chose this one because it seems like a good value with the microscope book it comes with, which really is a great book, and I included some images from the book. The book is fine for the 7 year old, but is really aimed toward someone older. The microscope images are nice and crisp. I don’t work in a lab or anything, but both of us hold degrees in scientific fields and have used microscopes a bit, and we both think it’s good. It comes with some already made slides, and then supplies to make your own. The microscope plugs into the wall but also comes with batteries. So if you want it all in one kit, I recommend this product.

I'm giving this five stars because it is an incredible kit...BUT!!!! BROKEN GLASS!!! I wondered if AmScope had fixed this. I thought, surely, this was an issue a while ago. NOPE! It is a CURRENT ISSUE!!! Here's the deal. The glass slide covers are NOT SEALED! (see first pic for that package) These suckers are about an 1" square, and they come out and get bounced around. I had to carefully unpackage everything, wipe it down with paper towels (to grab the glass shards while also being disposable), and then dab spots with tap to get up some that were just stuck. Because the slide covers are so small and thin, and the microscope is encased in styrofoam, they stick like glue, almost! (see second pic, they slip down the side, broken pieces throughout) It took me almost an hour to unpack the items and clean up! All that said, this microscope is WONDERFUL! It has a great deal of versatility and shows promise to intrigue budding scientists and young biologists alike. Honestly, minus the glass business, I want to buy one of these for myself!!! I've missed having a microscope on hand! And this one blends the balance of the different light exposures, allowing unique perspectives on translucent, semi-lucent, and opaque materials alike. It is worth the price and then some! Just be VERY CAREFUL when you open this sucker! Personally, I ended up throwing all the packaging away, just because I could not get rid of every sliver (thought I was good until a sliver went into my finger!). Still, I don't think you'll find this kind of deal for this kind of microscope! It's worth the bit of discomfort!

Style: Microscope Kit
I have, as an amateur, used microscopes of various levels of quality since I was a child. I currently have a Japanese Nikon and another brand of Chinese microscopes to compare this unit to. I bought this as a first scope for my grand daughter (and her science minded Dad) to learn with. I liked that it had a book, samples and more for them to get started with. I am impressed with the quality of this scope for its price. The kit is wonderful and has everything they need as beginners to learn about using such an instrument. The optical quality is not up to a Japanese Nikon but that is not a fair comparison by any means. The reality is this scope is far better than one could expect for a device prices this low. It has exceeded my expectations and is certainly very good for a starter scope or a scope for a hobbyist on a budget just starting out. The optics are fine. The included materials really add to the experience as you have everything you need to learn with and grow with. Its a bargain for what it costs. I would recommend it without hesitation and would buy it again without a second thought. Yes, a Japanese Nikon or other high end brand is better, but you will spend a ton more money to get into that class of scope. This baby will get you started and do a wonderful job. I highly recommend this scope for its intended use and as a great value for its price.

I would have given this microscope 5 stars if it wasn't for the packaging! Amazon did a great job however, when I opened the Amscope box I was immediately covered in 1000's of tiny pieces/shards of glass. The microscope was nice and tight in styrofoam but someone placed the 100 glass slides on top of the styrafoam with plenty of room to move around. THANK GOD I opened the box to inspect it before our daughter opened it on Christmas morning!!! The pieces of glass were so thin that they were stuck in the styrafoam, the bottom and sides of the box, my carpet, my unexpecting fingertips and all over my lap and carpet. Disappointed in the 90% loss of the 100 qty. slides. Now onto the MICROSCOPE... It is WONDERFUL! We have used this bundle package at our homeschool co-op and loved it so much that we had to have one for ourselves. The book & the slide prep kit are the icing on the educational cake. There is NO comparison between the quality of craftsmanship, the ability of magnification and the ease of use. We did our research when shopping around for other microscopes. Amscope nailed it! The price is unbelievable for what you are getting. You can feel the quality and rest assured this microscope will last your little scientist through high school. I highly recommend purchasing their prepared slides as an add-on for extra study.
