I'm a home-DIYer for my multi-family household, and I'm the appliance and car repair guy. It's my hobby as much as it is a necessity. So I think I'm a great candidate to review this tool set. My initial impression is that the tool box (just the BOX) is VERY good quality in terms of sturdiness, though I could think of a few minor improvements to improve upon it. As far as the tools, this gets you quite far in terms of taking care of home appliances and basic car repair jobs. You could change your oil, battery, reach hard to get to places, etc. You're going to need specialty tools sometimes, and parts, and safety gear, but this is a great start. QUALITY Overall quality is GOOD. Actually good, and actually something I would keep rather than gift. There's a different new set I have that I'm going to gift. "Good" goes for both the box as well as the tools. These are quality pieces, machined well, and stamped with the units and measurement. The box is shaped a little too wide instead of tall, but it's very sturdy and holds most of the tools well, some too tight and some not tight enough, but within an acceptable tolerance. PACKAGING Packaging is VERY GOOD. It can in a box with little cushion, though it was tight fitting and I did not see any damage at all. Each drawer had a plastic sheet screwed over it to keep the pieces in place during shipping. It worked decently well. Some pieces moved around, but stay closed by. It took about 2 or 3 minutes to re-organize them. FEATURES Well there's features that I like and features that I wish it had. -- 1. Latches on the top cover and the front covers that are good quality, especially the front gate. As someone who has kids and other prying fingers around, the more latches the better. -- 2. This set has a good amount of basic tools. Pliers would have been good to include, as would the screwdriver being a ratcheting screwdriver. That would have been great. -- 3. Magnets are used in the most required places, like the tips of tool ends to hold bits. That's good. VALUE I compared this to other tool boxes on Amazon, including name brands that most DIY-ers like me know, like Dewalt and Craftsman. This had more tools and looked like similar or the same quality. I think this is a great value product, and though not perfect, good enough that I will happily keep it. ... show more

This is a mechanic set with an impressive number of pieces but you will find many of them you will never use and some others that are needed are missing, I just wish the manufacturers would ask a real mechanic when assembling these kits. First there are a huge number of SAE/imperial sockets that no car brand will ever use, they're placed there just to fill spaces. Back then when manufacturers started to apply the world car concept (one model for all the world), most cars started to use Metric sizes but this kit has very little of that. The wrenches are small combined only 10,12,13 and 14 are metric size and they're not very precise on the grabbing especially if you're using the open wrench part, cars also use 8mm,15mm and 17mm very often, the kit has In my opinion too many hex key wrenches and screwdriver bits, those are cheap items that can be purchased separately according to the needs, the kit is mostly sockets but for example lacks a 10mm deep socket, most deep sockets are SAE, there are no E-sockets that most modern cars use, and the sockets has too much play when inserted which is an issue if you're working in tight spaces or you can't see the bolt directly (yes, many times we have to use a mirror to work), it also lack of long extensions, just 3 inches extensions are included, somewhat I feel this kit as unbalanced for mechanic work, there are definitely kits out there with lower number of pieces but better balanced, now for a weekend sporadic use this kit is ok as the quality of the steel is good and the ratchets appear to work fine but keep in mind you will need extra tools to work, this set won't be enough. ... show more

If you are looking to start working on or fixing cars, this is hands down the only kit you need to get started. I recently picked up the Amazon Basics 287-Piece Mechanic Tool Set, and it has already proven its worth. A friend of mine was even able to come over and finish a repair on his car using just this set, which speaks volumes about how comprehensive it is. The selection of sockets, ratchets, and wrenches covers almost every basic task you'll encounter under the hood. For the price, the quality of the tools is impressive; they feel sturdy and capable of handling real work without slipping or stripping. It takes all the guesswork out of building a tool collection because nearly everything you'd need for a weekend project is right there in one box. The three-drawer case everything is housed in is phenomenal. It keeps the 287 pieces organized so you aren't digging through a messy pile of metal to find a 10mm socket. The drawers slide well, and the layout makes it easy to see if a tool is missing before you close up for the night. This is easily the best purchase I've made for my garage, and it's a perfect foundation for any home mechanic. I did need help lifting this as it is about 40 lbs, the individual tools have a nice weight to them as well. The size is pretty compact for all that you're getting and every tool has a use in this box. Usually sets have a bunch of tools that aren't needed and a few that are, that's not the case here. Huge set, has basically everything I think I'll ever need. Was surprised and delighted that it came with short and long hex keys, as well as a 1/2 inch, 1/4 inch, and 3/8 inch handles. The case it comes with is good enough to do the job, but it's not top tier. I found the case a little hard to get open and closed, however, I think the snaps will get a little easier with time. This set is really heavy, so be prepared to find a spot for this thing to live, because you're not going to want to move the whole set around a lot. This set is on par with the older bigger name brand that i am sure you know about, but has more items, and is less money, so it's a better value. ... show more
